Combined, these various initiatives have resulted in an overall reduction in CO2 per vehicle kilometre of 10% from 2011 to the end of 2016, with a 4.43% fall in 2016 only. Bibby is continuing to invest in people, processes, and technology moving forward to further improve safety and sustainability in operations.
New vehicles and telematics systems at Bibby Distribution
BACKGROUND
Bibby Distribution is a family-owned end-to-end logistics provider, and 90% of their carbon footprint comes from their vehicle fleet. This means that driving efficiencies and reducing carbon emissions are always a priority, and a non-negotiable approach to environmental responsibility is a core company value. Bibby’s policies recognise that being smarter and more efficient with fuel use, numbers of journeys, and energy usage at facilities also translates into reduced costs, and a better deal for customers and the environment.
THE APPROACH
Bibby Distribution takes a holistic approach to environmental impact and works to demonstrate that a leading operator should also be a safe, environmentally responsible operator. An internal strategic plan, titled “Road to Zero,” sets out a vision for the health and safety of their workforce and the environment by aiming for Zero Harm, Zero Waste and Zero Emissions. The strategy’s approach is structured around leadership and culture, a safety management system, training, and technology.
Core initiatives include:
- Vehicle investment: The use of dual fuel vehicles have led to CO2 reductions of 10%. Investment in both longer semi-trailers and aerodynamic triple deck trailers has resulted in a 35% increase in capacity and reduced road miles. Bibby has also been an early adopter of Euro 6 engine technology, with over 76% of their fleet now Euro 6.
- Investment in telematics: The implementation of telematics systems linked to the driver training programme has improved both safety standards and fuel usage. A focus on excess idling through 2016 has helped to reduce excess idling from 4% to a class leading 2% and saved approximately 3000 tonnes of CO2.
- New policies: A tyre remould policy operating since 2013 has avoided 1,364 tonnes of CO2 being emitted and avoided 148 tonnes of waste to landfill.
- Geographic strategy: Bibby has relocated a key depot which is better placed geographically to serve customers. This has meant that nearly 869,045 road kilometres and 1,500 tonnes of CO2 have been eliminated.
